FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

What Happened to Lloyd Dobler After Say Anything?
The Tao of Lloyd Reimagines an ’80s Icon for Late-Stage Everything
Now Expanding to the
Edinburgh Fringe as a Solo Show

Lowell, MA – April 7, 2026 —What if Lloyd Dobler grew up, got political, and started a spiritual podcast?

The Tao of Lloyd, a satirical audio series created and performed by writer and actor Dennis Trainor Jr., imagines the iconic boombox-wielding romantic as a middle-aged, spiritually curious, politically disillusioned guide offering “kinda-sorta-guided meditations” for surviving late-stage everything.

Now 30 episodes into its second season, The Tao of Lloyd is expanding beyond audio: the project has been adapted into a one-person theatrical work that will premiere at the 2026 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, directed by Olivier Award winner Guy Masterson.

Episodes are self-contained and non-serial, making the show immediately accessible for new listeners and reviewers without requiring chronological listening.

Seriously Unserious. Devoutly Disobedient.

Lloyd is still refusing to buy, sell, or process anything.

But now, instead of kickboxing, he’s duct-taping ancient spiritual philosophy to the unraveling of the American empire—with deep gratitude, zero credentials, and the existential humor of a DJ spinning records in a microwave of Manifest Destiny.

From Cult Film Character to Anti-Guru for the Algorithm Age

Each 10–15 minute episode blends:

  • Taoist philosophy and guided meditation

  • Political and cultural commentary

  • Gen X nostalgia and existential humor

Lloyd’s voice is equal parts sincere and self-sabotaging; an “anti-guru” whose meditations are constantly interrupted by his own spiraling monkey mind.

Unlike traditional wellness podcasts, The Tao of Lloyd rejects optimization, monetized mindfulness, and spiritual branding. Instead, it offers something rarer: a flawed human voice trying to stay present while everything burns.

All published episodes are available for review, feature consideration, and interview requests. While episodes are self-contained and non-serial, if you’re looking for a way in, you can start here:

A Podcast That Becomes a Performance

The transition to a live solo show is not a side project—it’s a natural evolution of the podcast’s form.

The upcoming Edinburgh production expands the audio experience into:

  • a theatrical monologue

  • a guided meditation

  • a political satire

Directed by Guy Masterson, whose credits include Olivier Award–winning productions and decades of landmark Fringe work, the show positions The Tao of Lloyd at the intersection of audio storytelling and live performance innovation.

“What Dennis has created is something rare: a voice that cuts through the obfuscation and says what we are all thinking but can’t quite articulate.” — Guy Masterson

Creator with Proven Political and Theatrical Voice

Dennis Trainor Jr. brings a hybrid background in theater, media, and political storytelling:

  • Edinburgh Fringe hit Manifest Destiny’s Child (★★★★ The Scotsman, ★★★★★ UK Theatre Network)

  • Creator/host of nationally syndicated Acronym TV and The Resistance Report (both part of The Young Turks Network)

  • Documentary filmmaker (American Autumn, praised by The New York Times as "calm and smart, offsetting its stridency with discussion, music, even humor.")

His work consistently blends politics, performance, and humor, and The Tao of Lloyd extends that lineage into the podcast space.

Why It Feel Timely

The Tao of Lloyd arrives at a moment when audiences are increasingly:

  • skeptical of institutional media

  • exhausted by algorithm-driven outrage

  • disillusioned with commercialized wellness culture

The show offers a hybrid alternative: part meditation, part meltdown, part mixtape, and a central question:
“Can a fictional character from the ‘80s grow up in real time, and tell us something true about the present?”
